T20 World Cup 2024: The Journey to the Super 8 Stage
The initial league stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 has concluded, and we now have the 8 teams that have advanced to the Super 8 stage. Let’s recap the thrilling journey so far.
Team USA’s Spectacular Debut
Team USA, participating in their first-ever World Cup, made a sensational entry by chasing down 197 runs against Canada in the opening game. In their second fixture, they pulled off a stunning upset against the 2009 World Cup winners, Pakistan, winning in a dramatic Super Over. Although they lost to India in their third game, a rain-affected match against Ireland ensured their progression to the Super 8 stage from Group A. Joining them from Group A is India, who topped the group with three wins and a rain-affected match against Canada.
Group B: Australia and England Advance
From Group B, Australia and England secured their places in the Super 8 stage. England’s journey was on the brink after a rain-affected match in their opener and a 36-run defeat to Australia. However, they bounced back with significant victories over Oman and Namibia to secure their spot.
Group C: Dominance of Afghanistan and West Indies
Afghanistan and West Indies emerged from Group C, winning all their matches except the one against each other. New Zealand, despite their reputation for quality cricket, couldn’t live up to expectations and were eliminated after losing their first two games to Afghanistan and West Indies. The 2021 T20 World Cup finalists are thus out of the competition at the league stage.
Group D: South Africa and Bangladesh Triumph
From Group D, South Africa and Bangladesh made it to the Super 8 stage. South Africa was the first team to qualify, winning all four of their matches, including three closely contested games, one of which was a nail-biting 1-run victory.
The Thrilling Road Ahead
As the tournament moves into the Super 8 stage, the competition is set to become even more intense. With these top 8 teams advancing, cricket fans can expect more exhilarating matches and unforgettable moments.
