Hello Everyone,
Welcome to the 43rd Edition of The Cricket Diaries!
In this edition, we spotlight Ravichandran Ashwin’s stellar career as he announces his retirement from international cricket. Let’s dive into his journey and contributions to Indian cricket, a legacy that will be cherished for years to come.
Farewell to a Legend: Ravichandran Ashwin
One of India’s greatest off-spinners of the modern era, Ravichandran Ashwin, has officially retired from international cricket. After 14 remarkable years of service to Indian cricket, Ashwin bid farewell in Brisbane.
Ashwin wasn’t just a magician with the ball; he was a dependable batsman who often rescued the team in challenging situations. With 6 Test centuries to his name, he proved his mettle as an all-rounder who could turn games around. Ashwin constantly evolved as a player, adapting his strategies to overcome challenges and staying ahead of the game.
Let’s revisit his incredible journey and the numbers that define his cricketing legacy.
The Rise of a Star
Born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Ashwin began his cricketing journey as a classical off-spinner. His ability to consistently take wickets earned him his India debut in 2010.
In his early days, Ashwin shared the stage with experienced spinners like Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha. However, MS Dhoni’s bold decision to make him the primary spinner proved to be a masterstroke, paving the way for Ashwin’s dominance across all formats.

T20Is:
In T20 internationals, Ashwin played 65 matches, taking 72 wickets with an impressive economy rate of 6.91. His control and consistency made him a standout performer in the shortest format.
ODIs:
Ashwin was a key player in India’s ODI squad until the 2017 Champions Trophy. Despite being sidelined after the CT final, his numbers speak volumes: 116 matches, 156 wickets, and a stellar economy of 4.93.
Ashwin’s return to the ODI setup in 2023, including his selection for the World Cup, was a testament to his determination. He represented India in three ODI World Cups (2011, 2015, 2023) and five T20I World Cups (2012, 2014, 2016, 2021, 2022).
Ashwin’s True Arena: Test Cricket
Test cricket was where Ashwin truly made his mark. Debuting in 2011, he quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with.
Defining Moments:
Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2013: Ashwin took 29 wickets in 4 matches, earning his first of 11 “Player of the Series” awards.
Records Galore: Ashwin became the fastest Indian to 200, 300, 400, and 500 Test wickets.
Batting Heroics: With over 3,000 runs and 6 Test centuries, Ashwin’s all-round contributions were invaluable.
One unforgettable moment was his partnership with Hanuma Vihari in the 2021 Sydney Test against Australia. Battling injuries, the duo defied all odds to save the match for India.
Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, Ashwin flourished, taking 293 wickets — the most by any bowler under an Indian captain. His mastery made India a dominant Test side, especially on home soil.
