KKR Clinches Their Third IPL Title

The 17th season of the Indian Premier League concluded spectacularly yesterday, with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lifting their third title under the leadership of Captain Shreyas Iyer and Coach Gautam Gambhir. Here’s a brief look at the journey of the two finalists, KKR and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and how KKR emerged as champions.

Journey to the Final

KKR’s Dominant League Stage

KKR finished at the top of the league table, securing their place in Qualifier 1. Their consistent performances throughout the league stage set a strong foundation for their playoff run.

SRH’s Strong League Performance

SRH also had an impressive league stage, finishing in second place, which earned them a spot in Qualifier 1 alongside KKR.

Qualifier 1: KKR vs. SRH

In Qualifier 1, played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, KKR showcased their prowess by defeating SRH by 8 wickets. Chasing a target of 160, KKR reached the goal within 13.4 overs, with significant contributions from both their openers and middle-order batsmen.

Qualifier 2: SRH vs. RR

After losing Qualifier 1, SRH faced Rajasthan Royals, the winners of the Eliminator, in Qualifier 2. Batting first, SRH posted 175 runs in their 20 overs. Despite a seemingly modest total, SRH’s bowlers delivered when it mattered most. Captain Pat Cummins took the first wicket by dismissing RR opener Kohler-Cadmore. Spinners Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Sharma then took 3 and 2 wickets respectively, ensuring SRH’s place in the final.

The Grand Finale: KKR vs. SRH

Date: May 26, 2024

Venue: Chepauk Stadium, Chennai

In what promised to be an exciting clash, SRH won the toss and chose to bat first, a decision influenced by the pitch conditions at Chepauk. However, KKR’s bowlers had other plans. Mitchell Starc, KKR’s strike bowler, took the first wicket by knocking out Abhishek Sharma. In the next over, Vaibhav Arora dismissed the dangerous Travis Head for a golden duck. These early breakthroughs put SRH on the back foot, and they struggled to recover, eventually being bowled out for 113, the lowest score in an IPL final.

KKR’s Commanding Chase

KKR’s top-order batsmen stepped up when it mattered most, chasing down the target of 114 within 10.3 overs. Their confident and aggressive approach ensured that KKR emerged as the champions of IPL 2024.
